Tools and supplies for firing metal clay from/with base metals

In this category you will find (almost) anything you need for firing your metal clay jewelry pieces and objects. Among all ´the tools and supplies which are meanwhile available worldwide, we have selected those which we found most suitable and which we have experience of for years.

In general, metal clays are being fired in kilns or with torches. As the sintering temperature is roughly between 500°C and 900°C (for Art Clay Gold at least 1100°C), your kitchen oven will not be suitable.

Please note that firing methods depend on the type of clay you are working with. In general there is a difference between firing in air and without. Air is necessary for the binder to burn away as well as the sintering of fine silver metal clays. So, if you mainly work with PMC3, PMC+, PMC Original, or PMC Gold, please refer to the products in the crresponding category.

Why don't we carry kilns and torches?

Well, we once decided to offer metal clays and metal clay related products. Among these are a lot of items which are not often available in Germany, even sometimes in Europe. But kilns are available from many suppliers. Furthermore we have decided, not to carry electrical equipment. But we would be happy to help you with advice what kiln would be perfect for you and where to buy it.

Torches is the other stuff which you won't find at Metalclaystudios, but at most jewelry suppliers and in hardware stores. Nevertheless, firing with a torch has its boundaries and risks. It's almost not possible to determine the firing temperature by the color of the flame, but sometimes you need to know this exactly. Furthermore it's not suggested to fire stones and combustables with a torch.

Do you need to buy your own kiln?

This decision is depending a lot from how much you work with metal clays. If you work a lot and even sell your jewelry, it may be a good deal to buy your own kiln. If you just want to play from time to time, you are welcome to test our firing services. Its reasonable and for most PMC products free of charge for our customers. We have the exprerience! Especially in case of basemetals (including all mixtures with fine silver clays) experience most important. Regardless, if you fire in tissue paper or in carbon, you need to be experienced for perfect firing results. We fire almost all brands. Don't hesitate to ask
